Conveyor Wear Strips and Guide Kits
The parts that wear out on a cycle: slide rail, wear strip, and guide kits, stocked and ready to ship.
Flex-Line Automation supplies conveyor wear strips, slide rail, and guide kits from stock. Wear strip is a consumable that wears alongside the chain, and the two are typically inspected and replaced together.
Wear strip is the quietest part on a conveyor and one of the most consequential. It carries the chain, sets the friction, and absorbs the wear that would otherwise go into the beam. When it goes, the chain goes faster.
It is also a true consumable. Wear strip is designed to be sacrificial, so replacing it is not a repair. It is maintenance on a cycle, like the chain that runs on it.
Flex-Line has stocked and supplied these components since 1984.
What We Supply
- Slide rail and wear strip — the running surface beneath the chain, in standard profiles
- Guide kits — the consumable wear components that go with a guide rail assembly
- Hold-down wear components — for product that needs to stay put through elevation changes or transfers
- Fasteners, clips and retaining hardware — the small parts that hold up a repair when they are missing
Looking for the rail itself rather than the wear components on it? Guide rail, brackets and mounting hardware are on the guide rails and structural components page.
When Do Conveyor Wear Strips Need Replacing?
Wear strip usually signals its condition before it fails outright. These are the five indicators our technicians look for.
- Visible grooving or thinning where the chain runs, measurable against an unworn section of the same line
- Increased motor load or current draw on a line whose duty has not changed, as friction climbs
- New noise — squealing, chatter, or chain grab through bends and transfers
- Chain riding low, or running height dropping against a fixed reference point
- Accelerating chain wear — a new chain wearing faster than the last one usually means it is running on worn strip
Wear is rarely even. Bends, transfers, inclines and accumulation zones wear faster than straight runs, so inspect those first.
Lock out and tag out the conveyor before inspecting or reaching near a drive or transfer point. Never assess a running line by touch.
Why Wear Strip and Chain Are Replaced Together
Wear strip and chain are a wear pair, and it is worth treating them as one line item rather than two.
Install new chain onto worn strip and the new chain runs against a damaged surface from the first hour, so it reaches the end of its life sooner than the chain it replaced. When a customer tells us a chain replacement lasted noticeably less time than the previous one, the strip underneath is the first thing we ask about. Replacing both together costs more on the day and less over the year.
See chain and belt parts for the matching component, and our post on when conveyor wear strips need replacing for a fuller inspection walk-through.
How to Identify the Right Wear Strip
Wear strip is specific to the conveyor series and beam profile, so the series is the fastest route to the right part. If that is not to hand, send a photograph of the strip and the beam it sits in. After four decades with these components, that is usually all our team needs.
Most people calling about a worn part do not have a number, and the number stamped on a component is often the manufacturer's rather than the one you order by. That is a normal starting point, not a problem.
What to Keep on the Shelf
Wear strip is inexpensive relative to what its failure costs, which puts it near the top of most stocking lists we write. Because it is replaced alongside chain, holding one without the other only gets you halfway through the job. Ask us for a stocking recommendation and we will lay out what is worth holding for your line, with the reasoning behind each choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do conveyor wear strips need to be replaced?
The common indicators are visible grooving or thinning where the chain runs, rising motor current on an unchanged duty cycle, new squealing or chain grab through bends, chain riding lower than it used to, and a replacement chain wearing out faster than the previous one.
Is conveyor wear strip a consumable part?
Yes. Wear strip is designed to be sacrificial. It absorbs wear that would otherwise damage the chain and the beam, so it is replaced on a maintenance cycle rather than repaired.
Should conveyor wear strips and chain be replaced at the same time?
Usually. They are a wear pair. Installing new chain onto worn wear strip means the new chain runs against a damaged surface from the start and reaches the end of its life sooner.
How long do conveyor wear strips last?
There is no single figure. Wear strip life depends on load, line speed, duty cycle, product abrasiveness, temperature, washdown or coolant exposure, and alignment. Recording a thickness baseline and inspecting high-wear zones on a fixed interval is more reliable than a calendar.
What is included in a conveyor guide kit?
Guide kits bundle the consumable wear components associated with a guide rail assembly. Contact Flex-Line with the conveyor series to confirm the right kit for a given system.
How do I identify which wear strip my conveyor uses?
Wear strip is specific to the conveyor series and beam profile. Provide the series if known, or send a photograph of the strip and the beam it sits in.
Which parts of a conveyor wear fastest?
Bends, transfers, inclines and accumulation zones wear faster than straight runs and should be inspected first.
